Up for sale is a LONGINES, RETAILED BY WITTNAUER, Rare oversized silver manually-wound pilot's wristwatch. Case No. 5442792, circa 1930. Calibre 18.69 N, 15 jewels, hinged silver cuvette, dial with Breguet numerals on white chapter ring, center disc calibrated for seconds, sweep centre seconds, large silver case with hinged back, fixed bars, oversized ball-shaped crown, adjustment of the time by depressing the button in the band and simultaneously turning the crown, case, dial and movement signed.
Philip Van Horn Weems was a US Navy officer, inventor of navigational instruments and methods, including the Weems Plotter and the Second Setting Watch,and author of navigational textbooks.After Charles Lindburgh completed his celebrated solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean, the Navy assigned Weems to teach him celestial navigation for a month in 1928.Fred Noonan, Amelia Earhart's navigator, considered him his mentor.
